We Need To Talk About Kevin Analysis
We Need To Talk About Kevin
We Need To Talk About Kevin is a very sinister and thrilling film directed by Lynne Ramsay, the whole film follows a dark tone and theme throughout. we see a strong connection to the colour red as it appears regularly throughout, i think that the strong theme of red is foreshadowing the later events that take place in the film while also symbolising blood, which links to murder, anger and many other themes or could be a theme in itself.
We Need To Talk About Kevin was originally a book written by Lionel Shriver which was published in 2003, the film who we know was directed by Lynne Ramsay was released in October, 2011. The cinematography was directed by Seamus McGarvey, I felt that the cinematography was executed very successfully as it carried the tone and theme throughout the film, the cinematography allowed us to understand further into the film by creating juxtaposing images and shots.
Pre We need to talk about Kevin' lynne Ramsay hadn't directed a film for 9 years, and her the films she had done were not very well known in the eye of the general public. the majority of her other films are shorts and indie films, so 'We need to talk about kevin' is a different direction for the director. however despite Ramsays lack of experience in directing longer films this film were particularly successful as it was nominated for multiple Bafta awards for best director and Best British film and she won the British Independant Film Award, her work in the film clearly relfects this.

ReplyDeleteYou start your analysis talking about the genre of the film, 'thrilling', which is good, and the themes that go alongside it. This is a good basis for the beginning of an analysis as it will give you a base to build upon. By identifying these features you can begin to try and identify conventions and what the filmmakers did to tend to that specific genre. Try and do this at the start of each one of your analyses.
You also go on to discuss the filmmakers, mainly the director and cinematographer which is excellent, as it gives you a better understanding of how the film was developed and from what experience the filmmakers came from.
However, to make your analyses, you need to include more content. You have clearly nailed the context behind the film as looking at the filmmakers is a huge step, but a larger focus on the film and the certain intricacies will allow you to more clearly see the meaning behind certain elements of the film.
Also, I think that you should include some opinionated statements in this analysis. It is meant to be personal, show how you recived the film in the future and try and compare that to what was expected of the audience with each particular film.
Overall a good analysis, that just needs more specificity.
thanks that was really helpful!
DeleteI think that Vinay has nailed it really, you could also have mentioned how well the book did in terms of sales and if that helped the popularity of the film. What year was the film always put this in with the title.
