The Burning Plain Analysis

The burning plain is a Crime and drama hybrid. it was directed byGuillermo Arriaga and involved many well known actors, composers and cinematographers like Jennifer Lawrence, Hans Zimmer and Robert Elswit.

this film explores themes like the problematic relationship between a mother and daughter and death, both of these themes seem to bond and link during the film. throughout the film we see the development of a number of characters who interestingly end up being the same people , just at different stages in their life, the past and the future. we see dual narratives that end up interlinking and having many connections.these dual narratives and characters shown in their different stages of life ( teenagers and adulthood) are represented by the locations in which they have been shot. there are two main locations one being  a small town situated in a desert like area, which is bright and warm representing the youth and their endeavors while the other is a cold and much more concrete town, which gives off a dark and much more sombre tone symbolising the life that they later lead. this is where the cinematography proves very effective in instilling these personas through the characters surroundings.

The performance of the actors seemed to boost the film and made the film much more acclaimed, this is shown throught the awards that the film has won, like a venice film festival award won by jennifer lawrence and her performance in the film, as well as a AARP award won by kim basinger for best supporting actress.

  1. Tia this is a good start, I am not familiar with the film and therefore maybe like the moderator would hoe that you tell me a little more about it in order to enhance my understanding and be better placed to judge what you have written about. I would like to know what year it was made? Who the protagonist is? When both timelines where set, which years? How was it received at the box office and why? Your terminology is good and I am convinced that you enjoyed the film, I just feel that you need to get more down on the page to prove it. Well done!

  2. Strength: Good link to cinematography and what deeper meanings are created (symbolism) in the film. You have also explained how the performances and the actors in the film have affected the success of the film.

Improvements: Maybe go into more detail about the micro-features by specifically referencing scenes that are important through out the film. Also maybe add more background detail into the making of the film, e.g budget?
