In The Hollow is a short documentary about the act of a hate crime which took place in 1988 told from the perspective of Claudia Brenner. Girlfriends, Claudia Brenner and Rebecca Wright were attacked while on a camping trip on the Appalachian Trail. This documentary was a performative documentary, the main body of the documentary meddled between a rein-enactment of the event that took place and present day footage and audio of Claudia Brenner revisiting the scene and talking about the incident.
The documentary balances the elements of fiction and non-fiction film effectively. It manages to be an informative and factual account while mastering the dramatic and abstract elements within filming and the story line. The use of handheld camera shots and over the shoulder shots allow the spectators to empathize with the 'characters'/ people involved while still being a distant viewer who can spectate and analyse. this allows the audience to relate and create a connection without it becoming about the audience, still allowing the film to be about the subjects and highlight the important messages about hate crimes and the freedom of sexuality.the use of striking cinematography and gripping shots really accentuate the quality of filming and shows the type of documentary it is. the continuous shots of nature not only shows the setting but it provides a link with the story line and nature, it allows us to build a bridge between the two ideas that nature and love are all that matters.
The use of jump cuts and the clear difference in lighting show the difference it the way Claudia felt before and after the incident, the warm, natural lighting with orange undertone clearly signifies the warmth that Claudia felt when she was with Rebecca, whereas the much colder and harsher lighting used after they were attacked highlights the feeling of loneliness and the theme of pain and fear. the heightened diegetic sound of Claudia breathing heavily and the rapid jump cuts to before the incident represents what was going on in her head, allowing the spectators to get a slight insight into what it felt like, this also links with the fast moving and hectic handheld camera movement.
I think the purpose of this documentary was to bring light to the horrific ways people deal with things they dont understand, and that the way in which people view homosexuality was and still is a huge issue. it also brings light to the fact that the hate crime statistic act was only introduced in 1990 and that it takes things like murder to encourage someone to take action.
